Forms of cooperation

KIT generally distinguishes between three forms of cooperation between science and industry, each of which is assigned to individual agreements and contact persons at KIT. Technology transfer projects are an additional special form of cooperation.

The characteristics of the individual forms of cooperation provide you with information about the assignment*:

1. Contract research

  • KIT as Contractor
  • (Unilateral) transfer with regard to the knowledge to be developed
  • Goal-oriented and open-ended
  • Defined Way of Implementation
  • Interpretation of Results by the KIT Scientist Necessary
  • KIT carries out the project alone
  • KIT Claims Full Cost Coverage
  • KIT is interested in publications
  • Success not owed

2. Research cooperation

  • KIT as Cooperation Partner
  • Focused on exchange of experience and knowledge in general
  • Division of labour, open to objectives and results
  • Implementation not defined in detail
  • Contributions of both partners
  • KIT is interested in publications
  • Success not owed

3. Contract for work or service

(profit-related: contract for work and services, activity-based: contract of employment)

  • KIT as Contractor
  • Clear and known destination
  • Defined path of execution
  • KIT Claims Full Cost Coverage
  • No interpretation of results by the scientist necessary
  • No interest in publication
  • Owed success

In questions of rights of use (industrial property rights and licenses), the aforementioned KIT service units are supported by the Innovation and Relation Management (IRM) service unit.
