The KIT innovation fund

The innovation fund is an internal KIT funding line for Technology Transfer projects in the scientific institutes. The objective is the product-oriented development of market-relevant potential up to commercialization together with an industrial partner.
The innovation fund is financed by reflows from licensing income. The basis of the innovation fund principle is therefore a "intergenerational contract": Projects receive funding with the aim of generating returns for the scientists, the institutes and the innovation fund. These in turn are used to promote new projects.

Extent of funding

The innovation fund is not tied to a specific programme or thematic area, nor to the duration, the amount of the budget or a deadline. The market potential of the product idea determines the individual funding. The higher the later market potential and thus the expected turnover (ROI) is estimated, the more can be invested in product development.

You can submit an request for funding at any time. Proposal evaluations for the innovation fund take place throughout the year by a presidium committee.

Project types

Preliminary project

The innovation fund enables KIT-internal funding projects to overcome the hurdle between science and application. In particular, the development of a prototype as well as the preparation of market researches are supported. In addition, support is provided in the search for industrial partners, in negotiations, and in legal and commercial matters.

Technology transfer projects

KIT and an industrial partner further develop a technology into a market-ready product or process. The financial expense is shared equally between the innovation fund and the partner. Subsequently, the product is marketed by the industrial partner. The success on the market decides on the returns to KIT, which are divided between you, your institute, and the innovation fund.

Spin-off projects

Start-up projects from KIT institutes can also apply for funding to prepare the spin-off. A grant from the innovation fund can be used either for the further development of the product or for co-financing for public development programs. After the start-up, KIT receives in return license income and/or a share in the company.
